Biodiversity Action Day

27th May 2021

We really enjoyed our first Biodiversity Action Day here in Bayside SNS.

The whole school took part and there was great team spirit around the school.

We were also able to organise visits to the local orchard for some classes to learn about what our community is doing to improve biodiversity. We are very lucky to have such strong links with the great volunteers in Bayside, led by Brendan Cairney. Brendan is helping us to organise our courtyard gardens as well. We are so grateful for all his support and leadership in this area.

Biodiversity is concerned with all living species that live and grow in our locality. In the spirit of our new Green Schools’ Code ‘It’s our Duty to Protect Nature’s Beauty,’ we are asking all our pupils to take 5 minutes to reflect on their learning having spent time at our Grow Your Own Fruit and Vegetables Exhibit.

First, jot down 3 things that you have learned about planting and growing from the Exhibit in the back of your School Journal.

Next, we invite you to make a ‘Green Finger Promise’ to try to plant some seeds or nurture a growing plant over the last few weeks of the Summer Term at school.

Some suggestions:

  • Grow some cress from seeds; these don’t take long to grow and can be added to a salad or a sandwich for your lunch.
  • Plant some carrots in June that can be harvested in Winter-they might provide something special to add to Christmas Dinner perhaps.
  • Buy a present of seeds/bulbs/plants for Father’s Day/or the Birthday of an important adult in your life and plan to spend time together growing them.

Finally, remember that Derek in the local Verbena Home and Garden Centre will give lots of advice and a 10 % discount to every pupil from our school who buys some fruit/veg/herbs to grow when they present their school journal at the checkout desk!!

Thank you for your ongoing support in helping us to be the best Green School we can be-Happy Gardening.

Thanks to Ms. Murray and all the green team - there was a great buzz around Bayside today that wasn't just down to the bees!
